The First Lesson of Humility: Without God we would have nothing and we would be nothing

Humility is important to God because it allows Him to do an incredible work in us and through us. When we embrace humility, we open ourselves to God’s transforming power. Humility allows us to surrender our own desires and make room for God’s will. It enables us to receive His wisdom, guidance, and strength, positioning us to live according to His plan. Without humility, we can become self-reliant and resistant to God’s leading, but when we humble ourselves, we invite His grace to shape our hearts and actions. Humility also allows God to work through us, reflecting His love and mercy to those around us, and making us vessels for His divine purposes.

Jesus always wanted to let people know that everything He had, He had been given to Him by the Father. Throughout His life and ministry, He never sought to take credit for His wisdom, power, or authority, but rather pointed to God as the source of all His abilities, and He always gave glory to the Father in Heaven. In John 7:16, Jesus says, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.” This verse perfectly captures Jesus’ humility and His recognition that His purpose, teachings, and every gift He had were not of His own making. He didn’t claim credit for the miracles He performed, the teachings He shared, or the authority He had; instead, He acknowledged that these were all given to Him by the Father.

If Jesus, the Son of God, could acknowledge that all He had came from the Father, how much more should we, as His followers, recognize that everything we have—our talents, our resources, and our opportunities—is a gift from God? Just as Jesus humbled Himself and credited God for everything, we too must adopt a humble mindset and acknowledge God’s role in our lives. This is the first step when it comes to humility. To be aware and recognize that whatever we have, we only have it because it has been given to us, and we have it only by the grace of God and not because we are so special.

We came into this world with absolutely nothing—no possessions, no status, and no achievements. We were all born naked, entirely dependent on others for our care. And yet, everything we have today—our talents, our possessions, our successes—has been given to us. It is all a gift. You may be thinking, “But I worked hard for everything I have. I earned my salary, I built my career, and no one handed me anything on a silver platter.” While it’s true that hard work plays a significant role in what we achieve, it’s important to recognize that there are countless people around the world who work just as hard, if not harder, and yet they do not receive the same rewards or recognition. Some may labor day in and day out, only to struggle with financial hardships or remain without the basic provisions others take for granted.

This reality brings us to the first step of humility: acknowledging that whatever we have—whether it’s our abilities, our material possessions, or our career success—it is not because we are inherently so special or deserving, but because of God’s grace. We are simply stewards of what He has entrusted to us. Every talent, every opportunity, and every gift is a result of God’s goodness and mercy, not our own effort or entitlement. Recognizing this truth helps to shift our focus away from pride and self-reliance, and instead cultivates a heart of gratitude and humility. It reminds us that everything we have is a blessing from God, and without His provision, we would have nothing and we would be nothing. Humility begins when we can honestly admit that we owe everything to God’s grace.

True humility can take a person very far in life. It opens the door to God’s guidance, wisdom, and grace, keeping us grounded and focused on serving others. Humility fosters deeper relationships and allows God to work in us and through us, accomplishing more than we could on our own. By walking humbly, we align with God’s purposes and experience lasting peace and fulfillment. True greatness, as Jesus showed, is found in serving others and recognizing God’s grace in all we have.

When we study the lives of some people, we will realize that Christians who are gifted but walk in pride will eventually fall, as pride leads us to forget that all we have is a gift from God. James 4:6 warns, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” It never ends well when we allow pride to take over, as God resists the proud and brings them down, while extending grace to the humble. Let’s learn from Jesus and walk in humility.
